antofagasta.
Okay, the next few posts will be primarily pictures because I'm still trying to absorb the city and getting used to being in another country. The past few days have been filled with getting International Identifications, opening a bank account, getting a rental car, and finding a house to rent. We've been busy to say the least. So, here are some pictures. Enjoy!

Welcome to Jumbo, one of the 3 big supermarkets here. They have underground parking, so they use these big escalators to go up and down. The amazing thing is that the carts are designed to not slip on the escalator. This is Carly being unsure about Ammon letting go of the cart as they went down.
Ammon tried to get more pictures of the inside of Jumbo, but apparently taking pictures inside is frowned upon here. Whoops!
The kids at the beach. It's about 60 degrees today and there are people already wearing swimsuits laying out on the beach! Too cold for these Texans!

Views from the Mall. In this picture you can see Tottus (like Target) and HomeCenter (like Home Depot) they are located next to the mall.
These are pictures of our house. It's has 3 stories, 4 bedrooms, and a Nanny house in the back (Carly calls it the little house and since we most likely will not have a nanny, I'm sure it's going to become a little playhouse). This picture is a view of our house from the street, inside our gate. The front of our house is located down the steps to the left.
This is a picture is looking up from one of the lower levels.

Someone is still living in this house for a few more days, so, out of respect, I didn't take any pictures of the inside. I'll post more pictures of our house once we move in!

I'm really amazed at how well the kids are adapting to life down here. Most (if not all) of the TV programming is in Spanish and they don't seem to mind one bit. Carly makes friends wherever she goes.
Lynette seems to be doing well also despite the fact that she says I don't translate nearly often enough for her--sorry hon! You just look like you understand, so I assume that you do.
WOW! That house is amazing! That view! You're so close to the beach!! You get to do summer twice this year?! What's the weather like in the summer? I hope it's better than Houston! It looks so nice there. I'm so excited for you now. I had been feeling so nervous for you, but it really looks amazing! They've been playing some of the theme songs to shows Isaac watches on the Disney channel in Spanish and he loves it. I wish he'd pick some of that up. How long do you think it'll take you and the kids to learn? Okay...that's a long enough comment. sorry. so many questions.
Emily,
The summers here are really mild--actually the average temperature per year is about 75 degrees. Also, there is another LDS American family here and their daughter is the same age as Carly. They said that when they moved here she didn't know any Spanish and it took her only about a year before she was fluent.
Ahh.. I can't believe your there! OK, I think my denial is over. It all looks so nice. Does is feel like your on a vacation or has it set in that your going to be living there? Miss you.

So exciting and foreign! Everything looks modern which is nice. This is going to be such a great experience for your family.
This is going to be such an amazing experience! I love latin america! I love living overseas! And all the more exciting that things are "different" but still good and exciting and comfortable. And the beach! It's beautiful. I hope you learn how to talk well, eat well and take advantage of those siestas.
But I'm confused... it seems like there are 2 different houses. I'm guessing you're in a hotel until you can get into your house.. And have you already found the house you'll be living in for the year??
Kelli,
Oops, sorry! Yep, we're living in an Apartment/Hotel until our house is available and we get it partially furnished...probably for a couple more weeks.
I really enjoy looking at your pictures! Now we can all see a different part of the world! How exciting! I was expecting something different based on Jeff's old mission pictures but it looks gorgeous!

Hey I know what you can do with the little house in the back...Ill be there as soon as I can raise up thousands of dollars and we can come live in it. Really you are so lucky, as hard as it sometimes will feel, you will be sooo glad you did this, and when you come back youll know how lucky you truly are, while the rest of us are stuck in Texas FOR..EV..ER, not that theres anything wrong with Texas.
