flying first class.

The company flew us first class from Houston to Miami and then from Miami to Santiago. On our way to Miami, Wesley screamed the entire time we were on the runway but once the plane took off he feel asleep and the rest of the flight was amazing! First class is so "flossy flossy!" I did feel a little bad though as they were serving us the third course of our meal and they announced to the coach passengers that the flight attendants would be coming around shortly with snacks for sale (only $3.00 for a 3 Musketeer, a little bag of pretzels, or a small bag of chips--what a rip off).
Anyway, once we landed in Miami, Ammon had a brilliant idea
(for the record--I was against it, but caved under pressure). We gave the kids Benadryl to help them sleep on our 8 our flight to Santiago--BAD IDEA, VERY BAD! Carly was fine for the most part (except for the time she started ordering the flight attendants around and was acting like a spoiled brat...oh, the humiliation) but Wesley tossed and turned the entire night and screamed at the top of his lungs the whole time!
There is a small warning on the back of the Benadryl bottle that reads,
"May cause excitability and restlessness in small children."
That's the understatement of the year! I was mortified! We got dirty looks from the other first class passengers like...
We did the very best we could. Between swapping Wesley between the two of us, standing and bouncing him in the aisle, and frequent trips to the bathroom, we made it to Santiago. Exhausted and embarrassed, but we made it nonetheless.
The blessing: All 17 pieces of our luggage made it safe and sound.

If you hear people on TV talk about their worst fears in flying, one of them is that they will end up next to a baby, but dont they realize that it is our worst fear to fly with our babies? Do they expect people with kids to drive and take boats everywhere? I think Disney should really look into having their own airline. Complete with a few rocking seats.
But have no fear you are not the worlds worst parent, and I think it would be hard for you to find any parent who hasn't had the same experience, except for maybe the fact the rest of us don't get to go first class
First class is lovely. A perk of working internationally for sure!
I flew from Boston to Hawaii when Cole was 2 months old. He screamed the ENTIRE flight. We stayed in the back- bouncing and singing until the plane landed. Not an ounce of sleep. For sure the most stressful experience of my life. And the most sore my arms have ever felt. I'm sorry it happened that way. The passengers will get over it. Nobody felt it more than you and Ammon I'm sure.
I'm glad you guys made it though. And the luggage too. That is always my worst fear. Imagine...
Can't wait for the Chile updates! :)
Ooooh, that is flossy flossy!
And now I will use your entry as an example whenever Dustin asks why I wno't give the kids Benadryl on the flight. I'm always so worried it will back fire. MEN! Like they do anything anyway ;p
Sorry the kids were stinkers. That's a long flight, I'm sure they were the best they could be. They're just little anyway. I'm always amazed that my mom flew with us all those years for 14 hours straight and didn't kill us.
Glad you're there safe and sound and I can't wait for more updates!
so glad you made it! i flew first class once to washington dc...i was 10 but man was it nice. i loved that we got to board first and already had drinks and snacks when everybody else was getting on. i acted snobby too, carly's not alone! so sorry about the restless kids. i can't imagine how hard that was! at least it's over. good luck in the coming days!
Hi! First, I LOVE the new look of your Chile-blog (huh...sounds a little like chili-dog!)
I'm soooooo sorry about Wesley and Benedryl. I know that we spoke about it before you left (me for it and you pointing out that for some kids it can have the opposite effect) and I feel terrible that it was just as you predicted!
Glad you are all there, safe, happy and rested!
Love,
Mom B
wow what an experience. I've never flown first class before. Coach had to PAY for snacks? Ridiculous. I now know to never give my kids Benadryl.
WOW, I didnt realize first class had beds! Living the high life!
