breaking the rules.

With exception to occasionally driving over the speed limit, I'd say I've always been one to follow the rules. In fact, I like rules. They set boundaries and limitations. They govern societies and maintain peace and order. All in all, rules are good. That said, there is one rule in Chile that I just cannot and will not follow.

It's the DO NOT FLUSH TOILET PAPER rule. My reasoning for breaking this rule is two fold.
  1. It's disgusting -- I just cannot bring myself to put my toilet paper in those small, bacteria infested receptacles. I find it repulsive and unnatural and I will not do it.

  2. It makes no sense -- What purpose does not flushing toilet paper serve? Are they afraid the toilets will clog or overflow? Is it an environmental issue? Either way, it doesn't make sense.
So, until someone can explain to me the reason for not flushing toilet paper, I will continue to flush my paper free of guilt. And let's face it, even if I am provided with a satisfactory response, I'll mostly likely choose to ignore it.

Who knew that breaking the rules could feel so good...and sanitary!

I agree with you on all toilet paper issues... it should be dispensed from the top to the front and then should be flushed nicely down the toilet!! You're such a rebel :)!

I completely agree. In Uruguay it was the same thing...and I just couldn't stand it...it's just disgusting. It's like the shower thing too...why is it that they don't have tubs there?? a spicket hanging from the ceiling, over the toilet, mind you, is not a real shower!!

I think it's because the pipes aren't as good as they are in the states, so too much toilet paper can clog the pipes. It is gross, though!

Our Ward meets in the building after the Spanish Branch and we finally had to say something to them about flushing toilet paper. The bathroom smelt HORRIBLE by the time we got there and sometimes there would be TP on he floor. Oh my gosh, it make me sick to think about it. Do whatever you want in your homes, but our pipes work just fine -- FLUSH the toilet paper.

Lynette,
OK that is just sick and wrong. I fully agree with you. Toilet paper should always be flushed down the toilet especially for sanitation reasons.

I think that you are ok breaking that rule, possibly the most disgusting rule EVER. Ick. What could possibly be the purpose of this rule?

Okay seriously Lynette, I could NOT agree with you more. We just spent a week in Mexico for our 5 year anniv. a couple months ago and I was horrified at that rule. There are all these nasty overflowing garbage cans with used T.P. - how gross is that! I do not blame you for breaking that rule! :)

I couldn't agree more completely that the no-flush toilet paper rule is disgusting, unsanitary, and a very good rule to break!
