tips.

My friend, Nikki, just started a blog. Since she is new to blogging, she asked me if I had any advice for her. I loved her question so much, I decided to open it up for discussion. So, tell me...

What tips or advice would you give a new blogger?

Are there any do's and don'ts in blogging?

Do you have any blog pet peeves?

What types of things do you love/hate reading about?

*FYI: My blog allows anonymous comments so feel free to be honest, but please be polite! Thank you.

ahhh...well, yes. I hope I don't offend anyone. I hate the word verification on comments. I don't understand what it's for. I don't have it and I don't get spammed, so I don't get it. It's impossible to read sometimes and I will often not leave comments if I see it on the comment page.

I also have a problem with people who aren't real on a blog. Why start a blog if you're not going to be honest? Nobody's life is all sunshine and roses ALL the time.

my rule is there are no rules! i think you just blog about whatever, there are no blog police or gestapo or anything! but i agree with emily, be honest, unless it's a blog that's specifically fiction.

but i disagree with the word verification. I've had more than my share (and probably her share too) of spam messages, several which actually linked to viruses, and since I added that, they are down/nonexistant.

oh, and remember to always comment on other people's blog, it's food to some bloggers (and crack to others). :D

My only advice is to enjoy it!

I hate tags.

I also hate word verification... especially when it's on a private blog... what are they thinking?

I also love comments. They make me happy.

ok, so my advice... be yourself!

i totally agree with emily... nothing worse than reading a totally fake blog. keep it real people.

i also think--keep it short and sweet. i'm less likely to read novel posts.

and, ditto to the word verifications. annoying.

I can't stand blogs with music that plays automatically when the page loads. It always catches me off guard.

oh yeah, i agree with that last anonymous ones. if i want music, i'll play my own!! although...i have found some new songs that i loved on somebody's blog that had music, so maybe it's okay, but ONLY if you have great music playing. heh heh heh.

Ok, I also have to agree with the music thing. It's hard for me to read while there is music blaring. I almost ALWAYS mute it.

I like long posts ONLY if you have a great story going. No day to day travel logs.

I don't like tags either.

I like hearing that someone else is having a bad day too. Not that I ENJOY that they are having a bad day, but we all do don't we? It makes me feel like I can connect with them, and then leave them a comment with a word of encouragement!

...and I like seeing people's favorite things. What REAL people use and enjoy. :)

Ok I am a little late on this post but wanted to comment anyway. I think people need to be careful when posting pictures. {ie...those that are in the background of photos or other that might not want their picture posted on the internet for everyone to see. I agree with the tag thing but there is no obligation to continue the tag. I look at blogging as another way to journal events good or bad in our lives and I really enjoy doing it.

I love music posted on blogs (as you can see by my blog). It seems to put me in a better mood. Plus, I pull my blog up when I am cleaning or getting ready and listen to my favorite tunes.

I think it all depends on what kind of blog you want. What is your goal? Are you blogging to vent? or entertain? of inform people of you daily life. My goal of my blog is for people far away (like grandparents) to see what we are up to. And then after a few months to a year I turn it into a book like a journal/scrapbook. So for me, it's not so much about the entertainment factor as it is the keeping tack of little milestones in our lives. But Lynettes is much more for expressing personal feelings, for being ascetically (is that the right word?) pleasing, and entertaining the masses. So pick a goal and the rest will follow!!

I enjoy almost everything and feel like anything goes...
the only thing I've noticed that I dislike is really long ones especially when a huge article has been pasted.
I have to say that having my blog open to the "world" on the internet does make me a little self conscious and I tend to keep my feelings bridled and in some cases non existent. Which I know makes mine boring.

I do not like when people post "shout out" comments, like comments that don't mean anything to the post.

Great tips! I like your post. Mine's more of a day to day travel log mainly for the family that is out of state. Boring to some but easier way to get started in the blogging world.

I like seeing what people are up to so sometimes the daily log is enjoyable. However I do like peoples thoughts, favorites things, etc. The "real" side of life.

Music catches me off guard but I often enjoy the songs posted by others.

Comments are great since it lets you see other perceptions as well.
