interruptions.

Life is full of interruptions.
Some, stop us dead in our tracks, derail our plans and force us to change direction.
Others, simply create delays and after a short detour we find ourselves back on course.
Today, an interruption occurred while I was on the phone with a friend. I walked around the corner and found Lexie sitting on the kitchen counter in the puddle of an emptied juicebox--splashing, giggling, making a mess.
And just like that, my plans for the next hour changed.
I tackled the kitchen first, scrubbing and scouring every sticky surface and then, I did the same to a very sticky baby. Once the foamy bathwater had dissolved into suds and the kitchen floor was mostly dry, I wrapped Lexie in a giant towel, dressed her, and laid her on my bed. I watched her body still as she quickly fell asleep.
In that moment, I thought about how happy I was. Happy to have a clean and fragrant kitchen floor and how I could cross a chore off my to-do list. Happy to be able to sit and play with Lexie as she bathed, a task that is often rushed in the race to bedtime. Happy to watch her rest peacefully and capture her sweetness in the hazy afternoon light.
Happy--for the interruption.
Interruptions come when we least expect them. Some are welcome distractions and some are not. But either way, when interruptions occur, I'm learning to stop and listen.
Because when life interrupts, it usually has something important to say.

Those kind of interruptions usually make me nothing but mad. You put it so beautifully! And I do love a clean kitchen floor and a clean baby. So maybe next time Zoe makes a mess, I'll try to be happy about it?
A beautiful perspective and an equally beautiful photo of your little darling sleeping so peacefully. Thanks for the sweet reminder to look for the good in life's little interruptions.
